Blonde Doppelbock by Capital Brewery

A single hop beer big on malty flavor, Capital Brewery’s Blonde Doppelbock is described as a “true malt monster.” A Platinum award-winning beer, Blonde Doppelbock is sweet and smooth with a bready aroma, but hardly any hop notes. It actually reminded me of a Belgian in smell – I wonder if they used a Belgian yeast?

It poured a golden color, you might even describe it as honey, with a very light head. It actually started out pretty thick but then fizzled out quickly. No lacing or streaking left behind either. While pretty in color, I wasn’t crazy about the taste. The main notes were the sweetness from the malts and a slight booziness. I only caught a slight bitterness toward the end. It did have a big presence in the mouth but left a bit of a thick afterfeel. I could see it as maybe an after-dinner treat, but nothing I’d want to sip on a lazy afternoon.

Despite my own opinions, I’ve heard a lot of praise for Capital Brewery’s Blonde Doppelbock. If you’re a fan of malty beers this might just be the one for you. It is a Platinum award-winning beer after all! In fact, it has been awarded platinum six times in the past ten years at the World Beer Championships.

They’ve got quite a brewmaster as well. Ashley Kinart-Short is a UW Madison graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree, holder of an International Brewing Diploma from the Seibel Institute of Technology, and a member of the Pink Boots Society. For those unfamiliar with Pink Boots, it is an amazing organization that empowers women beer professionals. Be sure to check ’em out and maybe donate a bit 😉

Now lets take a look at that single hop…

Liberty

Originating from Hallertau Mittelfrüher in 1983, LIberty is disease resistant and genetically sterile. It is a triploid hop and half-sister to Crystal, Ultra and Mount Hood developed by Dr. Al Haunold. It’s been said that if you enjoy the hop flavor of Sam Adams Boston Lager, you’ll be a fan of Liberty.

Be sure to check out Capital Brewery and don’t forget to keep supporting your local businesses during this strange time.

Cheers ~ Steph
