Bull Falls Brewery

Happy Monday yall!

When I first walked into Bull Falls Brewery of Wausau, I thought ‘this looks like my uncle’s basement.’ So I wasn’t too surprised by the feeling of familiarity and comfort that came with it. Pale floors, oak chairs just like the set my parents had in the 90s, and peanuts on the bar, it’s hard to walk into Bull Falls and not have a little nostalgia hit ya. Our bartender didn’t spoil the atmosphere either and was both knowledgeable and friendly when talking about the options available – from the style of beer to how to progress through a flight and not ruin your taste buds!

I, unfortunately, tried the IPA first as always, regardless of how it affects my taste buds! Hoppershlagen IPA has all the piney notes you look for in a hopped up beer (plus it’s fun to say). Full of Citra, Ekuanot, Centennial, Channanger, and Simco it definitely has a nice round flavor. It did have a bit too much of a carmel touch for me, though, so I had to pass on it. In hindsight, probably a good thing as I ended up having my first full glass of oatmeal stout ever (my family was shocked). Simply named ‘Oatmeal Stout,’ I favored this one over their Midnight Star Lager which was a bit thinner and lacked the bitter notes of the Oatmeal Stout that I generally enjoy in a beer. My mother, on the other hand, enjoyed Midnight Star more. A German style Scharzbier, Bull Falls describes it as “The Dark Beer with the Blonde Soul” which I find very accurate.

One thing I wished I had caught before ordering was the glass sizes. Only seeing one style of what looks like a fluted Pilsner style glass, I didn’t realize they came in two sizes. For someone like me who tends to sip a beer over forty-five minutes or so, a smaller class is usually the way to go. I like when my beer warms up a tad, but it can get too warm when I can’t finish a larger glass quickly enough.

Bull Falls also offers regular tours, which I’m gonna have to make another trip out for. Offered every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, I had to settle with peering through the window of the brew house as I was there on a 4th Saturday…

All in all, Bull Falls Brewery is a place anyone can walk into and feel at home. It has a very small town feel that invites you to sit down and say ‘hi’ to your neighbor on the next stool.

Be sure to stop in before their seasonal Eggnog Star is out too! I wasn’t lucky enough to have a glass, but it sure looked tempting.

Maybe I’ll see ya out there 🙂

Cheers ~ Steph
